Day Three, Developing Network Prospects

Since Day One we have focused on what networking is all about, which is building healthy supportive relationships. I have added an incredible number of new potential sources to my personal network. But, how do I move these folks toward becoming profitable referral sources for me, while continuing to add new members to my network? For me, it can pretty much be summed up in one word, nurture. So I guess I need to learn how to be a Nurturer. Let’s see now…

These verbs mean to promote and sustain the growth and development of: nurturing hopes; cultivating tolerance; foster friendly relations; nursed the fledgling business.

Having farmers blood running through my veins brings the cultivate analogy right to the forefront! That means I better get ready to do some work, hard work, if I expect my crops to bear fruit. There’s a set of steps that I’ll have to be follow and they aren't going to happen overnight. Prepare the soil, firm up the beds, select and plant the best seeds, water and fertlize, pray for rain, pull weeds, fight insects and pray some more. You work hard from dawn to dusk and watch as your crop begins to grow and mature. I’ve done this in my own fields for many years, but most of what I learned was from my Mom’s dad, who was a rice farmer in Katy, Texas. I’ll tell you, there’s nothing quite so rewarding as watching this whole process from planting through harvest when the rice is in the dryer and you did it. One more year, one more crop. And after a good get together, Grandpa would get up and start planning next years crop.

That’s about as strong an analogy as there is for this ‘ol boy. If I apply these lessons to cultivating my relationships, they’ll bear a wonderful bounty. But is will never happen without planning, hard work, patience and prayer!
